False Bottom update

I posted about my False bottom mod with the Silicone sealant on the 13th of Jun.
Well The Silicone I used retained the petro chemical smell Embarrassed
I  did an Anchor steam Clone brew  about a month ago and it’s tainted the taste Ahh!. So the Sealant has been removed, Tricky stuff to get off the Stainless Mesh, lots of Cutting, Pulling and then Brushing with a Wire brush !

Last night I applied HA6 aquarium safe sealant , says its safe for fish and doesn’t contain or release any nasties when cured. Lets see how this goes…

@BrewPi rev c build oddities

I have a REV A BrewPi shield system up and running which has performed really well and upgrading to the latest dynaconfig Build went like a breeze. After getting another fridge/freezer I took the plunge and ordered a REV C shield to upgrade the DIY /Dev system ( and at the same time saw a cheap Mega 2650 on ebay  so I could still mess around with the planned I2C displays as the 2nd Leonardo would be permanently installed in the new REV C  system)

 Nice Rev C Board

Once built, I pressed the Rev C system known as GreenPi to Bastogne Beer conditioning tasks and Initially set it to Beer contant mode, Beer probe duly placed on the Corny Keg under  a bit of foam and off it went, until on the 2nd of July  I came home to find the display blank. After restarting  I also put the second corny with the newly brewed out wheat beer in the fridge.

It wasn’t until a few days or later that I twigged the fridge temperature was now higher than the beer temperature. after a quick twitter conversation with Elco I switched to fridge contant mode but things didn’t settle down and I again came home to the display acting strangely.

After  more advice and suggestions from Elco,  I  stripped the the GreenPi system down checked connections and reflashed the Leonardo with a freshly downloaded precompiled Hex. This has Improved things but there are still oddities. Temperature probes disconnecting etc….  So after lots of probe swapping and resetting device slots, to try and keep things simple… The  probes are still acting up ……
here’s a sample of the log…

The latest lead could be interference  from the fridge switching on but after looking at the latest logs this doesn’t quite match up !  Although it could be from the fridge next to it, but the Rev A shield system controlling this does’t seem to be effected, I’m confused  the Rev A system ( BlackPi) has less mains filtering on the mains input but is essentially the same build …

The BrewPi systems
It will get sorted thats for sure, but it’s put my small attempts at getting my I2C displays going on the Mega2560 on the back burner, so far I’ve re hacked the hacked DIY shield, took a slight detour into testing  a DHT22 humidity sensor against the DS18B20 and started to change some of the latest Stable code in line with MDMA’s post on his findings but I’m keeping it local as I’m not sure I  have the coding skills to fork  a branch of the code for the Mega2560 version..

Testing the Probes against each other

PS ..It’s been a warm day in the shed today just look at the temp chart !
it’s also just occurred to me that with both cornies in there in effect blocking and absorbing the cold it’ll probably need a fan to move the air past the refrigeration panel .

False Bottom modified

After my last mash, I decided to make some changes to my Mash Tun False bottom. Last weekend I applied Silicone Sealant .

IMG_4093
IMG_4094

It’s been curing for a week now and i’m wondering if it’s ok to do a mash with it yet ?
The Acetic acid smell has gone but it’s got a petro chemical  smell about it Angry

I used Homebase general Purpose Silicone Sealant, the one with a 25 year guarantee, I wondering if I should have used Aquarium/ fish safe sealant Sad
I plan to have a #Brewday either tomorrow or over the weekend, maybe a test soak is in order …..

update New – Old Fridge

After a bit of a delay This evening I’ll be picking up my New-Old Fridge.
It’ll have to be transported on it’s side in the back of my Estate car Oops so after getting to the Brew Shed will have to be left to settle for a day or two as  I don’t want the compressor oil up it’s cooling tubes…Crying
Over those settling days I’ll start to convert it to a second BrewPi Fermentation Setup and then put it into use as a conditioning fridge!
Hopefully I’ll remember to take piccies of the conversion along the way !

******update 8th Jun*****

After picking up and defrosting the freezer with a hose and letting it settle overnight It’s now being used as a conditioning fridge with the STC1000  the @BrewPi is a bit too much overKill  Plus I’ve not currently got the coding Skills to get my dev system up and running …

The fridge part nicely takes  a couple of corny kegs and there’s a convenient entry point for the CO2 and NTC thermister  at the back  Cool

2nd FV Blow off modification

I’d been pondering how to get the Temperature  probe into the Second FV, and after seeing Coombes69 build  it gave me the idea of using a John Guest speed fitting that I had spare. 12mm hole and the John Guest speed fitting fits a treat. My blow off bottle isn’t as fancy but what the heck it’ll work !

#BrewDay

Yesterdays #BrewDay didn’t go without it’s problems !Hell Boy
I need to sort out the mesh in the bottom of the Mashtun, either that or get another Stainless Steel mash Tun with a better fitting False bottom ! The grist came past the edges of the mesh and blocked the copper tube filter plus the Weight of 9Kg of malt didn’t help !
Then in the Last 1/2 of the boil the thermal trip on the boiler kept cutting out so boil was at 88c… In the end the contents were dumped back into the mash tun and the boiler bottom was removed and the trip bypassed Oops
The boil then resumed…

Took longer than anticipated but lets hope the Trappist/Bastogne ale  comes out ok Big Smile

OG of the Bastogne 1.080 which is pretty close to the design value of the Beersmith recipe

Now what temperature should i throttle it down to  ? Smile1 don’t want too much of that banana in there …

#BrewDay Not

I had planned to have a brewday on this Bank Holiday Monday, but instead I’m having a Social Day…
Something has aggravated the old Back.
The recipe was to be this..

Screen Shot 2013-05-27 at 11.29.59

Although Since I was having trouble getting the Bastogne Yeast, I had to settle for

White Labs WLP500 – Trappist Ale Yeast

Once in the FV I was going to keep a tight control on the temperatureDribble as it’s rumoured to a bit unwieldy , we’ll see …

Thats if the yeast is Ok as it’s been stored in the fridge for 3 weeks whilst waiting for Orange Peel !!
Hopefully i’ll get to it later in the week or next weekend Big Smile

I have also been tweaking the BrewPi web code to show me which system I am looking at.
I have changed the hostname  of each system, found in /etc/hostname and also not forgetting to change it in /etc/hosts  ..
I have two RaspberryPi controller BrewPi’s, one in a green Case and the other in a Black case so naturally they’re greenpi and blackpi Smile
I changed line 29 in the beer-panel.php to

<span id=”beername”><?php echo gethostname();?> Is Fermenting: <?php echo $beerName;?></span>

and also changed the index.php line 39 to be

<title><?php echo gethostname();?> reporting for duty!</title>

much better, I can now tell which is which. Big Smile

BrewDay 21st April

This was planned to be a Brewday with Paul from the Waggon and Horses in York, but due to staffing issues he couldn’t make it so I brewed by myself and created Dana’s Case… OG1.040

I substituted the yeast for a packet the Safale US-05 and upped the Cascade aroma by 5g hop fully nice but not too strong…
